Sprinters Revel on a Flat Course
The 1959 World Championship Road Race was held in Zandvoort, Netherlands. The 69 starters faced 28 laps of the 10.28 km (motor-racing) course.
Despite great form Darrigade almost missing the World Championship start because of a crash a week earlier. Riding aggressively Darrigade joined an early breakaway with Tom Simpson and Michele Gismondi. French teammate Jacques Anquetil controlled the speed of the peloton’s chase.
The breakaway stayed clear of the peloton and Andre Darrigade easily won the sprint in front of Italian Michele Gismondi and Belgium's Noel Fore. Tom Simpson finished in fourth place.
